Location: Hybrid – typically 3–4 days office-based (flexible)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:00am – 5:30pm, work pattern to suit workload)
Occasional Saturdays may be required for major incidents or project implementations.
Role Purpose
The Infrastructure Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of the organisation’s IT infrastructure. This position is responsible for managing and supporting core cloud and hybrid systems, including Microsoft 365, Azure, Active Directory, Intune, and associated networking and security solutions.
The role combines hands-on technical support with continuous improvement, ensuring that infrastructure services remain resilient, scalable, and aligned with the company’s operational needs and strategic goals. In addition to maintaining critical systems, the postholder will drive automation, process optimisation, and the adoption of emerging technologies to simplify management and improve efficiency.
Acting as an escalation point for the IT Service Desk, the Infrastructure Engineer provides advanced technical expertise, supports infrastructure-related projects, and contributes to the delivery of secure, high-performing IT services that enable the wider business to operate effectively and confidently in a modern, hybrid IT environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, maintain, and optimise core infrastructure systems including Azure, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Intune, and related services.
- Support and develop on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure to ensure stability, scalability, and performance.
- Act as a point of escalation for complex technical issues from the IT Service Desk.
- Implement and manage infrastructure security controls, identity management, and compliance measures.
- Monitor system performance and capacity, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
- Lead or support infrastructure-related projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with business objectives.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, standards, and procedures.
- Drive automation and process improvement initiatives using tools such as PowerShell, Azure Automation, or equivalent.
- Collaborate with third-party vendors and service providers to ensure optimal service delivery.
- Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery planning, testing, and implementation.
- Provide out-of-hours or weekend support for major incidents, upgrades, or project rollouts when required.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience managing Microsoft 365, Azure, and hybrid environments, including Entra ID
- Strong understanding of networking principles (DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewalls, VLANs).
- Expertise in Active Directory, Group Policy, and identity management.
- Experience with Intune, endpoint management, and device security policies.
- Knowledge of infrastructure automation tools and scripting (e.g., PowerShell).
- Understanding of security best practices and compliance frameworks.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Desirable:
- Microsoft certifications (e.g., Azure Administrator Associate, M365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator).
- Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V).
- Exposure to cloud networking and security (Azure Networking, Conditional Access, Defender for Cloud).
- Familiarity with backup, monitoring, and patch management tools.
Working Hours & Pattern
- Contracted Hours: 37.5 hours per week
- Core Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:30pm (work pattern to suit workload)
- Weekend Work: Some Saturdays may be required for major incidents or project implementations
- Hybrid Working: Typically 3–4 days office-based, with flexibility based on workload and business needs
